Library

Resources for Universalist Christians today

The Library is where new material will live: liturgies, prayers, hymns, readings and study guides written or reset for use now, free to copy and adapt. It is in preparation.

Additions will be listed on the front page and in the RSS feed as they arrive. Material to contribute is welcome at editor@freeuniversalist.org.

Source files on GitHub

The texts behind the Library are kept in the open, as plain XML with schemas, at github.com/freeuniversalist. Everything there is dedicated to the public domain under CC0, so it can be copied, corrected and built on without asking.

  • LiturgicalResources. Prayers and other components for worship, one file each, with the text, its author or the scripture it quotes, a citation of the source and the original wording before any modernisation. Components are added here as they are checked; this is the raw material the liturgies on this page will be built from.
  • CommonCoverdalePsalter. The Psalter of the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer, Coverdale’s 1535 translation as revised through the prayer books of 1789, 1892 and 1928, set beside the Common Coverdale, a modernisation made for this project: pronouns and verb forms updated, archaisms cleared, and a few renderings corrected toward the Hebrew. Both versions are in one XML file with an apparatus, and a script renders them to HTML.
  • 1979psalter. The Psalter of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer in the same XML format, with each verse divided at the chant asterisk and the divine name marked so that the small‑capital LORD convention can be kept. Useful on its own for pointed psalms, and as a second modern text to compare with the Common Coverdale.
  • LibHUT. The catalogue behind the Library of Historical Universalist Texts: a record for each of the 307 books with Dublin Core metadata and a description, grouped by subject, and scripts to fetch the PDFs from the Internet Archive. The catalogue is CC0; the scripts are under the MIT licence.
